I can picture 7 year old me all jittery with anticipation before the sun even rose, while all the people around me looked like they needed the biggest coffee of their life and probably an Advil pm for the plane.

My 20th birthday is just around the corner, and to this day there’s still something about being at the airport that just makes me SO happy. I love the hustle and bustle of all the people leaving a city to go off somewhere else in the world, on a new journey.

Airports have a way of re-energizing my desire to do more, and they provoke my curiosity about those around me: The vast possibilities for why and where they too are traveling. Some may be solo traveling for the first time, headed off to a new job opportunity, visiting their dream destination… who knows, but everyone has an interesting reason for being at the airport.

This time at the airport, I was off traveling to Europe for the first time. I had never been on a flight long enough to serve two meals, and over the duration of 10 hours.

I couldn’t wait to begin the new year, halfway across the world.

NYE - Berlin, Germany

Counting down “5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Happy New Year!” with all my friends and vicariously watching the NYC celebration in Times Square on tv. is typically how I spend most New Year’s Eves.

This year was different. I spent my New Year’s Eve at one of the prime spots in the world to celebrate the occasion, at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

Huge world event with masses of people = huge potential threats of danger and need for security. Of course, major precautions for safety were taken. Though I felt like I was being searched and patted down as if I was a member of a heavily feared terrorist group, in comparison to the people around me.

With hundreds of people waiting to get through security behind me, I was surprised that the security man had taken the time to dump out the entire contents of my purse. He inspected every individual item down to my Chapstick, which I and others around me thought was actually pretty funny.

Groups of people from all over the world congregated for what seemed miles in front of the famous Brandenburg Gate, waiting to ring in the new year.

I found it fascinating to sit in the square and listen to all the languages being spoken around me: German, Spanish, Arabic, and French were all languages I heard coming from different directions, and I’ve never experienced that walking around any other city before. My attention to hearing this around me was probably amplified more as I tried to distract myself from the freezing cold temperature while waiting hours until midnight.

We were literally freezing our booties off.

Huddled together like penguins in the Arctic, we had our heads down, with time moving in what felt like slow motion. Despite this, the energy, fireworks, and excitement for 2020 when midnight came in Berlin of all places was worth bearing a little cold.

In Germany, diets seem to consist of sausage and bread.

Moments after ringing in the new year, my first meal was not a surprise... sausage at an outdoor Berlin Christmas market. Rarely do I remember my first meal of the year, but that has to be one for the books.

My New Year’s Day was spent touring the expansive, historically rich city of Berlin. Throughout the day we were able to see the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Holocaust Memorial, to name a few. This was much easieraccomplished by taking a bus that we hopped on and off of to get around the large industrial city. So if you ever find yourself in Berlin, I would recommend taking the bus around because If we hadn’t done this, we would not have gotten to see all these places in one day.

Train Travel in Germany - The Hustle

If you know me, you know that I can be a big procrastinator and when I get around to completing a task, I usually like to take my sweet time.

Train travel is anything but leisurely.

Attempting to quickly lug around a suitcase that potentially weighed more than half my bodyweight was probably pretty hilarious to the observing, seasoned train travelers watching me.

Running up and down flights of stairs as we realized our train was actually on the other side of the station really had me getting in my cardio for each day, and my heart racing when we’d jump through the train doors seconds before leaving.

That’s the thing about traveling by train: timing is so exact, they always leave right on the minute they were scheduled to depart, and they don’t wait.

Hearing the station announcements in German and trying to read signs in German definitely did not help me at all in speeding up my pace. Doing this process in a group for the first time definitely had me learning fast though.

The rows of signs with various lengthy terms like “der fahrkartenautomat” aka “ticket machine” had my mind scrambled a bit with time being limited, but I started to recognize them after several train trips.

Out of all the time I spent in Germany, the few other terms I added to my previously nonexistent German vocabulary were: einfahrt (entrance), ausfahrt (exit), danke (thank you) and of course the one I remember most and having no use in my travels: frosche (frog), but fun to say.

Banking simple words in my vocabulary like Hello, goodbye, yes, and no, logically should have been more of a priority before jumping ahead to words like frog, especially considering that the majority of the people on the German ICE train only spoke German.

Let me tell you, the fact that “cappuccino” in English is also “cappuccino” in German was a blessing because it seems that I can’t go a day without one.

Bratwurst, Bread & Beer in Munich

The German cuisine: Pretzels, wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, crepes, and rich pastries are signature foods in Germany. Just like the abundance of Starbucks in the U.S., you could easily find places with these foods on almost every corner.

Walking upwards of 20,000 steps per day through Munich, I didn’t mind all of our occasional stops at German pubs to order an apple strudel or a savory crepe. Although I appreciate a good pastry, I was honestly just craving a huge salad after such a bread centered diet. I really don’t know how they do it year round!

The beer in Germany: it’s quite a big deal. The popular Hofbrauhaus had a huge selection and of course with all the hype surrounding it, I had to try some. Yes, it was legal. In fact it’s legal at age 16, so thankfully I wasn’t carded since I’m almost 20 now.

LONDON in less than 48 hours

Queue The Beatles, The Spice Girls, and the 1975. Yes, I created a Spotify playlist of music artists from England. Yes, I listened to it on repeat because I was that excited.

The London part of the trip was not our entire group that came to Germany, just my best friend and I for 48 hours of adventure in the city.

We stayed at the Trafalgar Hilton and I felt like we were living back in the roaring 20s. The perfect way to head into 2020. The lobby with muted blue walls, red velvet couches and vintage framed pictures of actresses in

black and white definitely gave me Great Gatsby vibes. I loved it.

In the heart of Trafalgar square, the five star hotel we stayed at was central to a number of sites to see including Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. We saw each of these places just within the first couple hours of being in London.

Day 2 we walked by the London Bridge, through Hyde Park, over to Harrods, and around the streets of Carnaby. In the midst of all the walking around town, I tried “fish and chips”... a must eat while in London.

53,000 steps later and we made it to a number of landmarks by the end, but I could have spent an entire day in Harrods, which is one of the most famous department stores in the world.

Harrods was practically a city in itself.

From halls of luxury accessories and perfumes to a hall with mouth-watering food from around the world, I didn’t know where to look because there was so much to see. Unsurprisingly, my favorite part of the whole place was the coffee bar. Just looking at the fancy espresso machines,

of course I couldn’t leave without ordering a cappuccino. Not only was it the prettiest cappuccino I had ever seen but the almond milk

was soooo creamy. The best cappuccino ever… and not just because it was at Harrods.

I absolutely adored London. It felt like a totally different world.

The grand architecture, the cartoon-like taxis driving on the left side of the road, transport by the underground tube, and the iconic red telephone booths each make this city unique from all others. My ability to legally order a glass of wine felt pretty special too.

Our travels felt like an accomplishment considering that the two of us seemed to have taken every form of transportation possible... besides a boat.

On the way back from London to Germany again, we began our morning at 4 am taking a taxi to the London-Heathrow Airport and shuttling on a bus to our terminal, then upon arrival to Frankfurt we took a train to Mannheim, hopped off and onto a second train so finally by 12:30 pm we arrived back in Neustadt.

And then we could breathe.

Throughout that process I even managed not to lose my passport after taking it out at least 5 times.

London, I loved you and I’ll definitely be back.

No Single Definition of Travel

Experiencing a new culture, participating in a service project, laying by the beach, and exploring a new city... All of these are greatly differing experiences that can fall under the category of “travel”. To people around the world, the word “travel” can take on a wide variety of meanings.

A question to consider: Is there a common theme among your travel experiences, or can you identify something unique about each trip you take?

Travel in My Mind

My personal definition of travel: Being immersed in the experiences and the unique culture specific to the place being visited. It is an opportunity to explore the unfamiliar and to learn about the world, as well as ourselves. Each place takes a little bit of our heart, and adds to our own story.

How I Got Inspired to Travel More

All my life I would say that I had some degree of aspiration to travel the world. Although there was a defining point when I knew that I wanted to incorporate travel into my life every chance I got. My junior year of high school, I participated in a service project through Courts for Kids, a non-profit organization that works with communities around the globe to build personalized sports courts. On my trip, I realized that building a court held a significance greater than just a place to play with basketballs. It served as a place that united the community and connected everyone who was a part of the process. My trip to Nicaragua gave me an opportunity to experience a different purpose for travel. Despite language barriers, our team formed a really strong connection with and knowledge about the community through shared work on the court. The contrasting aspects of their unique lifestyle to my own caused me to expand my perspective of the world and develop a curiosity for what future travel experiences could offer.

As another source of inspiration, world travelers that I subscribe to continue to ignite my curiosity and my craving to explore. Vagabrothers in particular is a YouTube channel of two seasoned travelers that sparked my interest. They share a range of videos from how and why they travel, to incredibly vivid video documentations.

Upcoming Travel

In my young life I have accomplished personally valuable but simultaneously minimal travel beyond the states. Though my aspirations currently exceed experience, these next few years (and hopefully many years beyond) will be filled with tons of travel, whether this be studying abroad in college or my own personal travel projects.

I recently planned and executed my own travel project of visiting the Canadian Rockies.

Coming up in Winter 2019 I am lucky to have a very exciting opportunity of travelling with my best friend and her family... stayed tuned for two weeks and three countries of Europe adventures.

Thoughts for you

Travel and the idea of future travel has become an integral part of my life. I encourage you to plan one trip, big or small, that is unlike any trip you have taken before. Discover how you define travel.

Taking Banff out of the Idea Vault

“Cheers to not knowing where we’re going!” was my dad’s first salute to adventure as we headed out on a 12 hour road-trip from Southern Washington to the Canadian Rocky mountains. Other than Banff and our 3 nights of campground stays, everything else was purposely unplanned. No campsites were booked for our first or last overnight stops and there was no minute by minute itinerary. All we had packed into the car was the necessary camping gear and little bit of room for spontaneity.

Summer after summer, I seem to spend time sitting behind my laptop screen creating itineraries for various road-trips that I only dream about taking. Banff National Park had been in the idea vault for a couple years now and I finally decided that I was going to complete the trip, no matter how it was going to happen. Like many people, I was drawn to the vivid images of turquoise lakes surrounded by the grandiose light grey mountain ranges, and just the thought of such a beautiful scenic drive made me want to hit the road. However, money and time were a couple of the obvious variables that concerned me. Who I would be going with as well as how I would book such a desired camping location with limited amount of time before the trip, were also critical factors I had to consider.

Knocking out my concern of who I would be traveling with, I decided to ask my dad if he would be up for the grand road-trip I had in mind. Rather than coordinating travel with a whole group while balancing different schedules, I decided to keep it less complex by travelling with only one person who also has a tolerance for unexpected circumstances and a similar craving for the great outdoors. Although, the planning of the trip was entirely in my hands. Checking campground availability in the stunning glacer-filled wilderness of Banff National Park one month before my desired trip window, was not an easy task. Both Two Jacks Main and Lakeside Campgrounds: Full. Tunnel Mountain I & village II Campgrounds: Full. I even went as far as checking the surrounding national park campgrounds including Yoho and Jasper which were each entirely full. My rule number one of the trip: there would be NO hotels, only camping. Eventually, there were campground cancellations which left single random spots open. I got lucky enough to book two nights in the Tunnel Mountain Campground and the third night in the Two Jacks Main Campground. Counting down only a couple of weeks, we would be exploring the wonders of the Canadian Rockies!

Hitting the Road: Pre-Canada

In my book, the journey on the road can be equally as important as the destination itself. For this reason, we decided to take one route to Banff National Park, and a completely different one on the way back home. The two routes were nearly equal in length, between 12-13 hours. The first path took us east through Idaho and directly up to Alberta, Canada. The way back down, we headed west towards Vancouver BC and down through Washington. Road-trips this long would not be complete without hours of music playlists, and the occasional podcast. My spotify was loaded with all kinds of music from alternative like The 1975 and Smallpools, to my throwback 2000s playlist, to Arizona party music. Downloaded onto my phone were also a variation of podcasts. I found quite the range of topics being on the road for multiple hours. At least one coffee a day made the drive that much easier too!

Camping Without a Campground

The halfway point in our drive left us near Coeur D’Alene Idaho, and it seemed perfect that Farragut National Park Campground was within only a few miles. Well, it would have been perfect if only there were open lots in the campground, but we arrived too late in the day for that to even be a possibility. Park Ranger Rick came to our rescue and offered to find us another camping spot for the night. Driving down the road and up to a totally isolated yellow field where a couple rickety picnic tables were randomly placed, I wondered why no one else was at this campsite. Come to find out, it was not actually a campsite. Park Ranger Rick had decided that he would create a new one for us, but he had to document it and warn us about potential wildlife in the area including mountain lions, coyotes, and cougars. The fact that this was not an actual campsite, and the thought of being eaten by a wild animal were a bit unsettling, but this seemed to be the only option… Cheers to adventure and not knowing where we’re going right! I guess that wildlife warning was necessary because as soon as I started to drift off to sleep in the tent, the growl of what seemed to be a cougar nearby made me go pale and totally freeze up. Fortunately, it did not eat us and I am glad we were not featured in the news as the Idaho campers who got brutally attacked.

Reaching the Rockies!

The grey mountain entrance into the Canadian Rocky Mountains was totally breathtaking following the second leg of the 12 hour drive, and crossing the border from the United States. After entering the National Park area, we drove a solid 2-3 hours deep into the mountains before hitting Banff. Reaching the picturesque downtown area, I hadn’t anticipated how large and lively it would be. My dad and I stopped for dinner downtown that evening, and over the course of our trip, we explored a few different restaurants after our activity-packed days. One of the mornings we had the best omelettes at Tooloulous, a popular breakfast spot. Then 20,000 tracked steps later, we ended that long day at 10:00 pm eating excellent food at the Indian Curry House. Honestly, exploring the beautiful downtown area was not even something I had considered much prior to the trip, but it was a great addition to the experience.

Camping, Canyons, and Very Cold Weather

Cleverly innovated bear trash-receptacles and warning signs lined the road on the drive towards our first campground in Tunnel Mountain.

Thankfully this time there would be an actual campground with actual people that occupied it, instead of just us and the wildlife. Not long after setting up our tent the temperature in the park cooled down rapidly to around 40 degrees. Thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain accompanied the chilling temperatures at 4:00 in the morning.

My temperature insulated sleeping bag was not enough to keep me comfortable since the thunder was sounding more vigorous and my exaggerated fear of death by lightning was all consuming. We also made the genius choice not to stake our tent down, so my dad got up to do that as I comically ran around the inside trying to keep the tent from blowing away. Needless to say, I slept in the car for the next hour until the storm was over.

As PNW natives, the full day of rainstorms ahead did not stop us from visiting the upper and lower falls of Johnston Canyon. The rush of the turquoise water through the giant canyons and crevices was well worth the hike even in the pouring rain. The lower falls portion of the trail ended in a cave opening up to a misty waterfall on the other side. As we hiked up further to the upper falls, we were rewarded with even better views of the roaring waterfalls from above, which all made for stunning photo-ops with our Nikon and Go-pro.

Tunnel Mountain Moments

We returned back to our campsite with quite a surprise after our first long day. We never took our tent down... so where did it go?! The wind speed must have really picked up while we were gone because we found that our originally staked down tent collapsed and had blown a few meters into the trees. I could not help but laugh at the sight of my dad dragging the whole tent through the dirt once he spotted it. The night continued with comical struggles consisting of trying to build a fire in the rain and running away from the swarms of mosquitoes every five seconds.

Exploring Turquoise Lakes and Grey Glaciers

Sleep in the storms was very minimal, but our next day trip to Lake Louise had me re-energized and ready to go! If you ever travel to Banff for any reason, the sole thing you absolutely need to do is visit Lake Louise. Nothing compares to the view of the vibrant turquoise lake with the backdrop of grey glaciers, lined with evergreen trees. However, the view of so many visitors photographing around the lake is something I could do without. I had the chance to take a few pictures of Lake Louise before we hiked a couple thousand feet more in elevation up to Lake Agnes. One thing I certainly did not understand was the dad carrying a stroller up the mountain that maxed out at a 51% grade. That right there is dedication. Despite the significant grade on the lengthy trail, the exhaustion was worth the views on the way up. Mirror lake is a smaller spot hidden within the glaciers before continuing all the way up to Lake Agnes, near the top peak of the glacier. A unique addition to the hike was the log cabin TeaHouse that had been built all the way at the top, overlooking Lake Louise, thousands of feet below! Finishing the hike, we decided to end the day with the classic Lake Louise activity of canoeing.

How could you not take the opportunity on a lake that gorgeous!

The 4th Tent Set-up and a Grizzly Bear

Night number 4 on the road meant the 4th time putting up the tent, including the set-up following the “missing tent incident”. On the drive up to the Two Jacks Main Campground, we had a grizzly bear sighting along the grass by the road, 2 miles from our camping location. I was pretty stoked to have seen and captured a couple pictures of a bear our last night in the rockies… trip officially made. Upon arrival to camp-spot #41 seemingly miles deep into the forest, we were greeted with an even larger swarm of mosquitoes. I was practically covered head to toe in bites by the end of the trip. Thanks to the mosquitoes, this last attempt took us less than 9 minutes before zipping up the tent for the night.

Following the “No Hotel” Rule

A final “cheers to not knowing where we’re going” was made as we grabbed a coffee in downtown Banff and started our second route headed towards home. We had in mind two separate 6-7 hour drives between that day and the next, but the storms at the halfway area in BC deterred us from wanting to set up the tent for a 5th time. A diner stop and a second coffee were exactly what we needed to carry us over into doing the full drive home in about 13 hours, walking through our front door at 4:00 am.

Post-trip Thought

The most worthwhile experiences do not go perfectly according to plan and there are always little lessons to take with you.

Lessons Specific to Canada:

#1: 120 km/hr on the highway means 75 mi/hr, don’t be a psycho American driver.

#2: The exchange rate of $1 in Canada= $0.76 in the US. So that's a plus!

#3: There is a time change in Alberta, not BC. There is also a time change in Northern Idaho... Driving through time-zones, we got confused.

Random Lessons for Camping and Road-tripping:

#1: Have ideas, but don’t over-plan. Expect the unexpected and you won’t be disappointed… there was so much to do where we were and it was impossible to do it all in such a short amount of time. But we made the most of what we did!

#2: Roughing it camping is fun, but still go prepared. The little things really can make all the difference. We didn’t have sleeping pads, so we slept practically on rocks, which was not conducive to good sleep for any of the nights. If you’re camping in cold conditions, have lots of extra blankets and a temperature insulated sleeping bag.

#3: If you have two phones on the trip, leave one on airplane mode. I had to do this so I would not get charged for cellular data outside the country. This turned out to be really beneficial too, because I used my phone way less and got to appreciate the experience so much more.

With that last note, put down your phone and go start a new adventure!

Reality of Being a Perfectionist & Dreamer

“When I grow up I am going to be a veterinarian/hotel owner and I am going to become very rich so I can own lots of pets and travel the world!” I enthusiastically insisted at age 4. My childhood certainly does not fall short of stories that exemplify these imaginative visions, and the step by step plan of exactly how I wanted them to happen. Of course this was not something that I was truly going to pursue, however these early ideas were quite indicative of future plans and aspirations.

For years I have had an idealistic mindset when it comes to projects or trips I have in mind. Tons of my free time used to be spent planning grand ideas in detail in the comfort of my own bedroom, but I rarely transformed those idealized plans into a reality. I believe we all have those influences that inhibit us from following a passion pursuit. This could be a personal fear, or especially in today’s digital age, the prevalence of the “perfect” lives plastered all over social media which seem to epitomize a pinnacle that we could never live up to. Perfectionism, undeniably has been my primary inhibitor ever since I was really young. Perfectionism in turn, has manifested in my procrastination. The possibilities within new adventures have always exhilarated me, however the risk factors of imperfection, uncertainty, or failure involved with change, have terrified me.

Acting on Bucket-Lists

Bucket-Lists: no matter who you are, you probably have your own version of one. Most likely, many of those things on the list you haven’t done because you have years to do them right? The problem with this mindset is that you let too much time pass without ever doing what you really want to do, then the opportunity passes. Recently having completed my first year of college at the University of Arizona, I have had some time to reflect on things I have done, and even more time to think about where I am headed. We are always told that college is supposed to be the best years of our lives, but I really only think this is true if the extra initiative to make things happen exists, regardless of the outcome. Sitting with google documents of all of my uncompleted adventures, and vicariously watching YouTube travel videos is fun and all, but ultimately sitting back behind a screen just isn’t personally fulfilling, particularly during college. I have become more of a podcast enthusiast lately and one of my favorites is the Hidden Brain series by NPR. Their episode “Close Enough” does a fantastic job of highlighting the issues and trends in this generation of vicarious living. The consumption of all of this media we have access to makes us inaccurately feel like we are learning more and experiencing more. Though these videos may inspire us, they are not our stories or our own accomplishments.

Pursue your passion. Stop seeking validation.

Making things happen successfully, often involves the ability to prioritize. My belief is that as long as we feel genuinely validated, happy, and fulfilled with the decisions we choose to make for ourselves, then this is the right way to go. Time and time again I have learned that it is impossible to please everyone and much more important to feel personally fulfilled by prioritizing things that truly make us happy. Coming to my own realizations, I knew that college would allow me the freedom to take control and choose my own path so I could find a more significant personal meaning in the things I pursued. Of course, it takes time to discover a passion, and this does not happen without trial and error. With much thought about my future, I decided to declare business as my major in college. My long days of AP classes, competitive dance, and involvement in DECA were coming to a close. Beyond ecstatic, I left behind a seemingly past-life chapter and began a new one at the University of Arizona in fall 2018.

Trading Perpetual Rain for the Desert

Bundled up on the couch with a hot coffee and the sounds of thunderous rain among evergreen trees is a standard day in my home of the Pacific Northwest… even in the middle of July. This gloomy PNW weather along with the cactus obsession I coincidentally developed many years ago in Mexico, made me long for life in the desert. Trading the perpetual rain of Washington for the desert and cacti of Tucson, Arizona was a dream that I was going to be turning into real life plans. Moving away to Arizona, however, did not come without a whole lifestyle change too, but it was just the change I needed. The weather was just a fraction of the shift I would be experiencing, as the social culture in no way compared to home either. Living in a new dorm, gaining suite-mates, and being enrolled in a new set of classes was just the foundation of all of the changes.

Stepping Outside of a Label

I guarantee that my choice to go to the University of Arizona, with the images of massive dj parties and such a social culture was confusing to some, as my label has typically been “introvert”. Labels are commonly being tagged on all of us whether we are blatantly aware of them or not. Even though they may be accurate in some circumstances, conforming ourselves entirely to them is surely not a requirement. It was important to me to ignore the confinement of this label so it did not prevent me from chasing one of my greatest bucket-list items: having the college experience I truly desired.

A Change in Lifestyle

Pop culture movies like Legally Blonde, Neighbors, and Animal House allow our imaginations to run wild with different versions of what college could be like. My own quintessential ideas of college including joining a sorority, making the Dean's list, studying abroad, and the list goes on, consumed my idealistic mind for months, along with numerous fears I held onto. Dropping the perfectionist mindset was necessary as I became immersed in a lively campus consumed with chasing opportunity, making social connections, especially in the Greek system, and funny enough, being ”trendy”.

Sorority recruitment was my first glimpse into the competitive social culture of the U of A. The week-long process done in the 100 degree August heat was absolutely exhausting, but beyond rewarding. I am well aware of the numerous stereotypes that surround the life of a sorority girl. Experiencing it for myself, I grasped my own insight into the value in being a part of a sorority which goes way beyond the trendy Instagram pages. The sorority that I joined was more than I could have asked for as I was surrounded by a sea of strong-charactered, academically motivated, and wildly fun sorority sisters who I would consider to be my best friends. In truth, this was not an instant gain as being new, knowing no one, and being naturally reserved presented me with challenges in finding my place for the first two months among a pledge class of at least 110 girls. Over time as I learned to incorporate my newly found Arizona style with genuinely being myself, I fell into making the most authentic group of friends, and gaining a wonderful sorority family.

Eller, EDM, and Everything in Between

Partying with my parents at a fraternity on family weekend; Taking an 8 hour bus ride from Tucson to Disneyland with my sorority sisters; Having a snow day in Southern Arizona; Spending school nights laughing with my best friend/roommate until we realized the sun was rising… these are just a few of the in betweens of my freshman experiences. They are some of the moments that define my memorable first year. Personally, I hold a deep value for education. Equally, I desire having a memorable college experience filled with a lifetime of ridiculously wild or even embarrassing stories to tell rather than having no stories at all. No stories happen by staying at home.

Balancing every aspect of the freshman experience was no doubt a challenge. Before going out, I spent many nights on the 4th floor of the library with my laptop and iced coffee, at a desk spot overlooking the palm trees that lined the green mall of the beautiful campus. In college, you often have to sacrifice a bit of one of three things: social life, education, or sleep. I would say I sacrificed sleep and I don’t regret it at all. Academic success and the stories that came out of experiencing my freshman year at the U of A exceedingly made up for it. My aspirations of eventually getting into the Eller College of Management, and simultaneously experiencing the unique energy of the U of A’s edm dj parties, allowed no time to sit back in the comfort of my own room. I ditched the idealistic expectations I had about college which made my first year absolutely unforgettable.

A Dreamer Being a Doer & Embracing Imperfection

My most powerful take away this year: chasing adventures and passions with my whole heart imperfectly, would always be more fulfilling than planning perfectly but never doing. Even though I am not a rich veterinarian/ hotel owner like my imaginative 4 year old self had hoped for, I am currently living out one of my greatest bucket-list items in creating college memories and travelling every opportunity I can.

Time and opportunity

Since I can remember, I have had a passion for writing, and starting a blog has been in the back of my mind for years. I never felt like I could create a post perfectly enough, so the procrastination set in. Sometimes you just have to dive in and do it. Creating this site is a piece of my journey in making my dreams actually happen regardless of the challenges, imperfection, and uncertainty.

What to expect on Oh! Mia Gabrielle

My page will be focused on my experiences regarding what it means to make the most of college, the accounts of my travel experiences, and all around making personal dreams happen during the chaos of college life. My hope is to give you the encouragement to chase after your dreams that you have put on the back burner and to spontaneously take that trip you’ve only dreamed about taking.

Keep up with me this summer 2019 as I complete my camping and road trip endeavors in Banff, Canada… originally one of my many archived travel plans.
